stakeholder management for the works on the Ring Road

With the ‘Werken aan de Ring’ project, De Werkvennootschap is renovating the motorway (R0) around Brussels. The programme is preparing the Ring Road for the mobility needs of tomorrow, with a focus on safety, liveability and multimodality. As one of the largest infrastructure projects in Flanders and Brussels, it calls for clear communication and strong stakeholder management.

the question

'Werken aan de Ring' is a complex project with a significant impact on the surrounding area. It extends across several municipalities, across two regions and alongside a large number of business parks.
This means the redevelopment of the Ring Road has a daily impact on a substantial number of people. A transparent approach towards all target groups is therefore essential, like residents, interest groups, businesses and (supra-)local authorities. This applies throughout every phase of the project: from design to permission process and implementation.

getting everyone on the same page thanks to a well-thought-out strategy
With a thorough stakeholder strategy, we worked towards a widely supported project. We advise De Werkvennootschap on strategic stakeholder and community management for all (sub)projects within the ‘Werken aan de Ring’ programme.
our impact
Redefining the Ring Road was, and still is, one of the largest infrastructure projects in our country. In our strategy and communication process, we focused on:
communication strategy
A thorough strategy that paid close attention to the overarching communication of a complex and long-term programme, translated into concrete actions for each of the different subprojects.
stakeholdermanagement
Extensive stakeholder management, including the mapping and follow-up of all stakeholders across different municipalities and regions. This included organising informal stakeholder events, discussion evenings, information sessions and webinars for all types of stakeholders.
proximity communication
Strategic advice and operational support for communication with administrative actors, residents and people directly affected by the project, including acquisitions.
project communication
Transparent, thought-out and clear communication for the public and stakeholders, from design and permission process through to implementation. In addition, communication with people directly affected in the context of expropriations, making this a complex but also emotionally charged project.
content creation
Communication with the wider public and stakeholders through information markets, newsletters and webinars, as well as the development of virtual applications such as a digital exhibition and a VR experience.
project management
Tight coordination within a multidisciplinary team, including the creation and implementation of flowcharts and scripts for information sessions, as well as for telephone and written communication.
